Girls in New Jersey can get involved with folkstyle wrestling at any age. Parents of younger girls are encouraged to reach out to the local recreation leagues in their area. Sign-ups for recreation programs typically start in October and practices begin by mid November. Most recreation seasons run into the month of February. Many public middle schools in New Jersey run wrestling programs in the winter. Girls are encouraged to sign up for these teams. Once girls enter high school they can continue to wrestle on their school’s wrestling team. There are several “girls only” wrestling tournaments within the high school season that athletes can participate in. Additionally, girls that qualify will also have the opportunity to wrestle in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (NJSIAA) post-season regional and state championships. To educate yourself on details for the girls high school season, please visit the NJSIAA website: https://www.njsiaa.org/sports/wrestling. Regardless of age, all girls can find supplemental practice opportunities in season and out of season at clubs around the state. To find a club in New Jersey that is near your home, explore the “club” tab on the homepage of this site.
